WITHIN BREATH, WITHIN EARTH, 2026
Open Call Finalist | Exhibition ‘Ecology, Mapping and Ritual’ at cultural heritage sites in
Beaune, France
Curated by TERRA
TERRA’s historic sites become active participants. Works are positioned in dialogue with spaces shaped by centuries of domestic life, agriculture, winemaking, craftsmanship and civic history, inviting audiences to move between contemporary artistic practices and the accumulated histories of Burgundy.
Hur’s site-specific project approaches ecology as something that begins within the body - through breath, rhythm, and an awareness of one's presence in space. The body becomes a site of dwelling where internal and external environments continuously meet; body, earthly vessel, and land are perceived as interconnected forms. A ritual unfolds as participants remove their shoes, step into the space, and sit or recline, physically inhabiting the center. Through this engagement, a shifting ecology of presence, perception, and relation emerges. The work operates as a living system shaped by interdependence and change.
Composed of three elements — Persimmon dyed Hanji (Korean mulberrry paper) plane from Korea, ceramic vessel made in NY/USA with influences from Korea, Japan and soil from France — the project brings together material presence and tactility drawn from diverse places and cultures, inviting an experience that is visceral and embodied, rather than one perceived through sight alone.
The Vessel at center titled “Charting The Celestial” bing together cultural memory, geological histories and cosmic interconnectedness. Across matte-black ceramic surfaces, delicate line drawings evoke shifting landscapes, ocean waves and celestial constellation. The intricate markings trace the relationship between breath and movement of body, hand, and fire transforming the vessel into a poetic map of time, space and human experience.
The site is a 15th-century watchtower constructed out of Burgundian limestone blocks and laves (flat slabs), a landmark in Beaune, France. Through this installation, a former medieval fortification is transformed into a sanctuary for art and meditation. Its historic role of outward protection and observation takes on a new meaning, inviting us inward to contemplate the interconnectedness of land, body and spirit.
